Spray On Foam Insulation

The idea of Spray on foam insulation is a no-brainer in my opinion. It meets the criteria for energy efficient and healthy homes. A spray foam insulation system seals cracks and crevices to reduce air infiltration (the amount of air that enters and exits a building). Infiltration is one of the largest contributors of heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. Reduced air infiltration also means less dust and allergens moving from outside to inside. I’m most familiar with Demilec, a company based in Canada with a 20 year track record. They also have a facility in the U.S. in Texas. Their open-cell product, Sealection 500 spray foam insulation is rated at R-3.8 per inch. It’s also a green product. Sealection 500 Soy Based insulation is made from vegetable oils and more than 40% recycled materials per barrel, including more than 1,000 plastic bottles. A health concern about spray foam insulation stems from foam insulation that was installed in the 1970’s. This contained formaldehyde that off-gassed into the home. The Demilec foam product does not contain Urea Formaldehyde. It has received approvals from the Environmental Choice Program of Canada, which is the Canadian equivalent to the E.P.A. in the United States. Another feature is its durability, it won’t shrink or sag. Spray on foam cannot be used in existing walls.

If you have an existing home you that you think needs an insulation upgrade, the best application for this product is in the attic, crawl space and rim joists in basements. Because spray foam insulation seals a home so well, your home will have to be
tested with a blower door
as well as combustion safety tests to ensure your health and safety. In order to bring in the proper amount of fresh air, a mechanical ventilation system can be installed in the home. Spray on foam insulation is more expensive than conventional methods. Consider this an investment because it will continue to pay you back year after year.
