Hydronic Heating Systems
Hot water or hydronic heating systems are for those who want more than a forced air heating system can offer. In addition to exceptional comfort levels, owners of hydronic heating systems also enjoy the benefits of heated floors, warm towels, abundant hot water for showers, bath and laundry.
How a hydronic system works Water is circulated from a
heating boiler
through a network of pipes to either radiators, finned baseboard radiation , radiant floor heat tubing, an air handler that contains a hot water coil
(hydro air)
and even beneath a sidewalk, patio or driveway for snow and ice melting. Besides all the advantages I’ve listed, hydronic heating systems are very flexible. Some of our clients like to keep their bedrooms cooler than the rest of their home. This is very easy to accomplish with hot water systems. Different areas of a house can also be heating with different heating devices.
Using my own home as an example, our main floor is heated with radiant floor heat, the 2nd floor bedrooms have individually zoned finned baseboard radiation, our basement family room is heated with radiant panel baseboard and the bathroom is warmed with a heated towel rack. Some people opt to heat their garage with either an in-slab radiant heat system or either finned baseboard or European style flat panel radiators. Hydronic heating systems also permit creativity for interior design with non-conventional
heating radiators.
Hot water heat is also future-proof. If you are planning to add a family room or an addition it’s easy to add a heating zone. We now use long lasting plastic tubing to connect heating devices to the boiler. It’s as easy as running electrical wire. The real nice thing about these systems is all the heating tasks are done with just one combustion appliance unlike warm air systems that sometimes require two furnaces and even two water heaters where there is a high demand for domestic hot water. This is much more efficient and requires less maintenance. Hydronic systems that are designed with the right heating boiler, the right control system and good installation practices will give you all the comforts of home.
