Mar 23, A Lesson Learned

We take a lot of pride in the German-made boilers we install.

Our clients expect and get great results, but every now and then we run into a problem with an oil boiler.

99 of these problems are traced to the oil tank that has been in the house for 25 years or more.

Over the years, sediment accumulates at the bottom of the tank and forms sludge.

We do our best to prevent this sludge from entering the oil lines by inserting them through the top of the tank and leaving the end of the tubing above the sludge.

We also use a very good oil filter.

Still, this is never enough.

Despite our best efforts, dirty oil finds its way to the oil nozzle.

After many hours of unnecessary labor, Ive come to the conclusion that whenever a boiler is replaced the oil tank should be replaced.

It just makes sense.

We wouldnt buy a brand new car and use the gas tank from our old car.

If you are considering replacing your oil boiler or furnace be prepared to spend at least $1500 to replace the oil tank.

Believe me, its worth it.

Do you gain more weight in the winter?

Some people attribute this to being less active in the winter months.

That may be true, but now we have another excuse.

I recently read a book about the relationship of radiant heat systems and the body that stated, colder outside temperatures stimulates the appetite and leads to an increase in appetite.

Dig in and stay warm.

Feb 2, It's not always the heating guy's fault

I received a call from a client who was concerned his heating bills were abnormally high.
The heating system in question is a brand new radiant floor heating system coupled with the most efficient boiler available.
I told him I would investigate.
After ruling out heating problems we then looked at the thermal envelope of the home.
This included inspecting the visible insulation and air leaks into the house.
We check the leaks with a blower door.
This is a large fan that is placed on an outside door.
The fan is turned on to simulate a 25 mile per hour wind on the surfaces of the house.
Air that is leaking into the building is then easily found.
There is a mathematical equation that compares the actual leakage rate to a target number.
Within minutes of the test we found the rate to be almost twice the desired rate.
It was like having a window opened.
The client really thought he did a great job of buttoning up his home.
I'm convinced the job of insulation be left to a professional.
The choice is yours to either pay extra to have the house done properly or pay the fuel company month after month and year after year.
